Nina H. Walje

June 21, 1930 — March 2, 2023

Otterville

Nina Hays Walje, 92, of Otterville, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Tipton Oak Manor.

She was born June 21, 1930, in Fortuna, daughter of the late Lester Floyd and Zela America (Hays) Woods. On January 10, 1953, at her parents’ home near Bunceton, she was married to George H. Walje, Jr. who preceded her in death on February 2, 2001.

Nina attended school at Bunceton, Tipton and Pilot Grove Schools because she had her choice and wanted to try them all. She was 16 years old when she graduated from Pilot Grove High School and was salutatorian of her class.  Her brother taught her to drive when she was 14 years old in a Chevrolet with a rumble seat.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Otterville and served as Sunday school teacher, WMU Mission Leader, Vacation Bible School teacher and church secretary. She was a leader in the Lamine Baptist Association. She lived a life of faith, always looking and finding the best in everyone.

As an active member of the Otterville community, she volunteered at the Food Pantry and Senior Center.

She was a homemaker while raising her family and was active as a 4H leader and PTA parent. She later worked at Inter-State Studios for over 20 years.

Nina was an avid reader, but writing was her passion and two of her books were published.

She always hoped for a granddaughter with auburn hair. She got her wish with her first grandchild and even got two more red heads a few years later.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Walje (Margaret) and Russell Walje (Kirsten); and four grandchildren, Melissa Walje, Micah Walje (Lindsay), Alexia “Lexi” Walje and Ethan Walje (Arianna).

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Walje, who passed away in June of 2011; a brother, Oren Woods; and sisters, Elna Rhodes, Iona Williams and one in childhood.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Otterville, with Rev. Russ Slocum officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time Sunday at the church.

Casket bearers will be Mark Walje, Russell Walje, Micah Walje, Ethan Walje, Gene Walje and Clay Dunn.

Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Otterville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Otterville to help send kids to youth camp.

Arrangements are in the care of Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Otterville.
