Wallace "Bill" M. Schad

Wallace M. "Bill" Schad, age 84, of Independence, Missouri, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence.
He was born September 14, 1924, in St. Louis, a son of Melvin E. and Clara Jones Schad. On October 2, 1971, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Missouri, he married Doris Beckmann and she survives at their home.
He attended rural elementary schools and the Versailles High School.
Wallace served his country during World War II in the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine, serving aboard the USS William E. Borah, the USS Adoniram Judson and the USS Mexican. He received the Merchant Marine Emblem, Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Pacific War Zone Bar and the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar. On June 27, 1946, he received notice that the SS Adoniram Judson received the Gallant Ship Unit Citation for outstanding action against the enemy during the initial invasion of the Philippine Islands at Leyte. At that time a Gallant Ship Unit Citation Bar was awarded to the crewmen for their services on that ship.
He was baptized May 6, 1996, and confirmed July 14, 1996, at the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Wallace was a Union Contractor. On March 19, 1948, he joined Local 835 in Carlsbad, New Mexico, later working at Midland, Texas. In February of 1950, he transferred his membership to Kansas City Local 518.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Donna Homer of Kansas City, Missouri; Vicki Smith of Kansas City, Kansas and Lisa Schad of Beverly Hills, California; two sisters, Joyce Hinkle and husband Claude of Louisburg, Kansas and Mary McMilan of Oak Grove, Missouri; five grandchildren, Michelle, Melissa, Stephen, David and J.R., also other relatives and friends.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James Schad, one son-in-law, Larry Smith, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Mark.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home with Rev. Martin Hoyer officiating. Burial, with military funeral honors, will be in the St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery in Stover.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
