Verna Mae Shipman, age 90, of Eldon passed away on Friday May 13, 2022 at Eldon Nursing and Rehab.
It was on the 30th day of June in 1931 when Frank and Emma Gordon Hensley welcomed their baby girl, Verna Mae, into their home in Harlem, Missouri.
On June 18, 1958 Verna Mae was united in marriage to Charles Shipman in Miami, Oklahoma, who preceded her in death on May 8, 2011.
Verna Mae was a dedicated worker. She started working at American Can Company when she was nineteen years old working as an inspector until the plant closed in 1978 and she was offered retirement.
In addition to being a dedicated worker, Verna Mae was a dedicated Mama of three. She put everything she had into taking care of her husband and her three girls, Karen, Vicki, and Marsha. During the summers they would spend their time at the Lake of the Ozark on the family boat.
Later in life she put the same love into caring for grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. When she and Charlie moved to Westpoint, Mississippi, her grandchildren were able to spend a month of their summers with her.
Verna Mae enjoyed painting, feeding Hummingbirds and cooking. But most of all she loved our Lord and praying for people.
Everyone who met Verna Mae became a friend. When she lived in Westpoint she befriended senior ladies through her church and would spend time with them, take them to the store, and whatever else they needed. She enjoyed cooking. One of her kindest traits was that she wouldn't spend money on herself, but would give to others, always wanting to help out and take care of them.
Verna Mae's greatest enjoyment in her long life was her family.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Versailles.
Left to carry on her legacy are her three daughters, Karen Langley of Hollister, Vicki Simons and husband Bernie of Aldrich, and Marsha Donovan and husband Tom of Marshfield; one brother, Bud Hensley of Claycomo five grandchildren, Wendy Winters, Jerad Langley, Regina Jennings, Amanda Donovan, and Olivia Donovan; six great grandchildren, Ashley Rand, Kayla Smith, Cody Winters, Shelby Winters; and Zen Langley along with many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Charlie, she was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, June Dowell, Gale Hensley, and Bennie Hensley.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the Versailles First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Rick Parton officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Versailles Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
