Steve G. Sapanas CWIII US Army (Retired), age 75, of Wardsville, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born in Charleston, West Virginia, a son of Stovas “Harry” and Ardie Moore Sapanas. On October 6, 1990, Steve and Marge were united in marriage in Bennett Springs, Missouri.
Those who knew him enjoyed his great sense of humor and extraordinary storytelling ability. For those who asked, he often offered great words of wisdom. Steve had colorful expressions, a dapper demeanor, and was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was well respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by all who love him.
Steve was a career serviceman, beginning his career with the US Navy in 1958. He retired from the US Army in 1982, having served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He later earned his Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees. Following his retirement from the military, he was employed as Administrator of the Criminal Investigation Bureau for the Missouri Department of Revenue, retiring in 1993. He also worked for the Board of Nursing, Department of Corrections, and Social Services.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Steve G. (Leslie) Sapanas, Jr. of South Jordan, Utah; Kelly T. (Candi) Sapanas of West Plains; William J. Sapanas of Warrensburg; Cassy L. (Adam) Allee of Jefferson City and Tanya L. Soval (Shawn Lindsey) of Holts Summit; seven grandchildren, MaShealyn Sapanas; Remney Rose, Gage Stovas, and Kael Bryant; Zion Stovas, Zoey Rose, and Keeven Soval; three step-great grandchildren, Lilly and Lucy Lindsey and Jacklyn Allee; one great-grandchild, Micah Sapanas; two sisters, Helen Surface of Roanoke, Virginia and Freda (Jim) Cheek of Albuquerque, New Mexico; along with other relatives and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville.
Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday with military honors.
