Norman Steinmeyer, age 92, of rural Stover, passed away Friday morning, January 15, 2016, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover.
He was born October 21, 1923, on the family farm in western Morgan County, the only child of George and Caroline “Lena’ Brandt Steinmeyer, who preceded him in death. He was baptized November 3, 1923 and confirmed May 1, 1938, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Benton County. The confirmation verse chosen was Hebrews 10:23,
“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised.”
On June 2, 1946, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover, Norman was united in marriage to Lucille Ehlers, who was wearing a wedding dress she had fashioned from the parachute silk her brother brought back from the war. Lucille survives at their home.
Norman worked and lived on the family farm until his health recently failed him. For more than 22 years he was the handyman at Lake Placid near Stover, remodeling the docks and cabins for the families who made it their summer home.
He was a gifted carpenter, who enjoyed woodworking and refinishing wood. His latest hobby, and quiet ministry, was making and giving Jesus plaques to family and friends. His green thumb and enjoyment of the outdoors led him to planting a turnip patch, which he maintained to provide turnips and their greens to his many neighbors and Lake Placid residents.
He was a faithful member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, he is survived by three children, Carol Spaulding and husband Carl of Versailles; Phil Steinmeyer of Ottawa, Kansas and Sue Day of Pilot Grove; one granddaughter, Bethany Spaulding of St. Louis; along with other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover with Pastor Gerald Kurka officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Stover.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Monday, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover.
