Michael Meek

Michael Gene Meek, age 55, of Stover, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018, at the home of his sister surrounded by his family and friends after a lengthy illness and a short battle with cancer.

He was born July 19, 1963, in Independence a son of Richard and Burgoyne Kunkle Meek.

Mike was an outdoorsman, who for many years worked for John Carter on his farm and at the Buffalo Creek Winery, south of Stover.  He most recently worked as a tree trimmer with Hengtes Tree service until his health forced him to retire.

Mike is survived by three sisters, Diana Howerton and husband Steve of Independence; Frances Wayson and Kelly Simmons and husband Charlie all of Stover; two brothers, Lee M. Golding, Jr. and wife Terri and Richard L. Meek Jr. and wife Jenny all of Stover; also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, Many of whom considered him more of a father figure than uncle, and his best friend, Tony Burnett, who was more of a brother, than a friend.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Lil' Charlie Simmons.

In keeping with his wishes, he had a “Green Burial” and was interred into rest the following day in the family cemetery, Copperhead Holler.  For his committal service the songs of “Only God Knows Why,” “Free Bird” and “Down to the River to Pray” were played.  Tony Burnett, Karl K. Kunkle, Charles Simmons, Zachary Simmons, Jacob Huff, Lou Meek and Bedar Meek served as casket bearers and Ben Kunkle, John Kunkle, Brad Kunkle, Dave Sutton, David Rice, Lee Golding, Richard L. Meek, Jr. & Garry Simmons served as honorary bearers.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family and will be used towards the purchase of a wrought iron fence to enclose the cemetery and a flag pole to be placed at the cemetery.  Contributions may be directed to Charlie and Kelly Simmons at 28182 Little Buffalo Road, Stover, MO  65078.
