Merrill Summers

Merrill Corliss Summers, age 85 of Belton, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover. He was born February 1, 1933 in Osborn, Missouri a son of Vern Lafayette and Elzoe Roberta Hewitt Summers. Merrill was united in marriage to Grace Alva Wilson in 1958 and she preceded him in death in 1981. In 1982 Merrill was united in marriage to Betty Lou Puckett and she preceded him in death in 2017. He was a 1950 graduate of Jamesport High School in Jamesport, Missouri. Merrill served his country in the United States Army, receiving his honorable discharge in 1955. For most of his adult life, Merrill lived and worked in the Kansas City area. One of his first jobs was with West Virginia Pulp and Paper. From 1968-1978 he worked for Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Corporation. He took employment with Mid-American Dairyman, Inc., where he remained until his retirement in 1990. Merrill was a member of the Raymore Christian Church in Raymore, Missouri. Merrill loved to travel, whether stateside or overseas, he was always ready for his next adventure. His love for travel led to a hobby of collecting maps, which he often used to show where he had been or plan his next trip. He was always ready to hop in the car and take a scenic drive, and he especially looked forward to trips to the Lake of the Ozarks. He is survived by one sister, Roberta A. Douglas of Maryland; his godchildren (nieces and nephews) Teresa L. Wallis, Michele K. Douglas Howell, Jill D. Heeter, Karen A. Latham, Darren V. Douglas, and Scott M. Douglas; two stepchildren, Jay Puckett and Linda McCord; sisters-in-law, Mildred Heimsoth and Frances Brown, a niece, Kathryn Wahlers, a nephew, James Brown, along with other relatives and friends. In addition to Grace and Betty, Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jefferson G. Summers, and one nephew, Stephen Heimsoth. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 19, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Military honors will be rendered immediately following the service with interment in the Stover Cemetery.
