Marian E. Burke, age 81, formerly of Springfield, Massachusetts, died Saturday, December 22, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles.
She was born February 26, 1926, in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts the daughter of Albert H. and Bernadette M. (Stebbins) Tompkins.
She married Edmund J. Brown and he preceded her in death. On June 6, 1953, she married William A. Burke, who preceded her in death on September 11, 1995.
She retired from the Department of Transitional Assistance for the state of Massachusetts at the age of 80. Prior to her employment with the state, she worked for Diamond Match Corporation in Springfield and F.W. Sickles Corporation in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
She played the violin with the Symphony Orchestra in Springfield for several years. She also played her violin at many weddings and played in the orchestra for the Monson Summer Theatre plays in Monson, Massachusetts.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marian A. (Brown) and Lavern Avey of Fortuna; three grandsons, Jeffrey R. Avey and his wife Karen of Fortuna, Matthew T. Avey of Sedalia, and Christopher L. Avey of Fortuna; two great grandchildren, Heather D. Avey and Joshua R. Avey both of Fortuna; two brothers, Jerome A. Tompkins of Suffield, Connecticut and Charles A. Tompkins of Holbrook, New York; one sister, Patricia Aker of Marina, California; two step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alberta (Bert) Rae.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 P.M. - 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 26, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles with the funeral service following at 6:30 P.M. with Pastor Scott Marriott officiating.
Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 29, in the Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Memorial contributions are suggested to a local chapter of the Humane Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles.
