Margaret Mathilde Steenbergen

February 16, 1928 — June 28, 2008

Margaret Mathilde "Mattie" Steenbergen, age 80, of Russellville, passed away Saturday evening, June 28, 2008, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.
She was born February 16, 1928, in Hannibal, a daughter of James Arne and Bertha Goldammer Westgard, both deceased. On May 21, 1949, at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church at Russellville, "Mattie" was united in marriage to William Gerald Steenbergen and he survives at their home.
She was the valedictorian of the 1946 graduating class at Russellville High School.
Mattie was a homemaker, busy raising her three children and helping her husband on the family farm.
Mattie was a longtime, faithful and active member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she served as a Vacation Bible School and Sunday School teacher for many years. She was active in the WMU at the church and especially enjoyed the quilting group and being a volunteer with the prison fellowship.
She was also active in the WPFA and the Sherwood Neighbors Club in Russellville. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts, was active in the local knitting group and was a supporter of the Russellville Community Pool where she participated in the women's swim group.
Mattie was a faithful supporter of the Russellville Indians athletic program, never missing a sporting event that her children and grandchildren were involved in. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whose greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Gerald, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Jackie Steenbergen of Russellville; two daughters, Gale and Jon Schaffner of Jefferson City and Gayla Steenbergen of Kansas City; a sister and brother-in-law, Loraine and Wilbur "Rip" Gordon of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Brendon Steenbergen, Collin Steenberger and wife Susan, Abby Hartman and husband Bryan , Nik Schaffner and Joel Schaffner, three great grandchildren, Noah and Gabriel Steenbergen and J.D. Hartman, a nephew, Craig Gordon and wife Charlotte and two great nephews, Cliff and Clay Gordon, also other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 2, at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Bro. Alan Earls and Bro. Ron Zamkus officiating. Interment will be in the Enloe Cemetery west of Russellville.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 1, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Russellville Community Pool or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
