Elmer Leon Fry, Jr., 98, of Tipton passed away Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Tipton Oak Manor.
He was born on April 24, 1927, in Tipton, MO, the only child of Elmer Leon, Sr. and Elizabeth (Richey) Fry. On September 12, 1948, at St. Thomas Church in Nurnberg, Germany he married Louise Katherine Franz.
Leon was a proud American who honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. A lifelong resident of Tipton, he graduated from Tipton High School before beginning a long and dedicated career as a Core Driller for the Missouri State Highway Department.
Leon was a man of quiet faith, a Christian who lived his beliefs through his actions and the way he treated others. His work ethic and integrity were evident in all that he did.
Outside of his career, Leon found great joy in the outdoors. He maintained a small cattle farm as both a hobby and side occupation, taking pride in the land and the animals he cared for. He had an incredible knowledge and appreciation of nature—able to identify nearly every bird, plant, and tree by name. His deep connection to the land reflected his spirit as a true outdoorsman and naturist.
Leon also possessed an expert understanding of the geography of Missouri, knowing its towns, roads, and natural features better than most. He carried with him a wealth of knowledge and a quiet wisdom that came from a life well-lived and deeply rooted in the heart of his home state.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Fry of Olathe, KS; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith, and Eric Sallman; one great-granddaughter, Lucy Smith; and other family members, John Knorp, and Jerry Reese.
Leon was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife; and one son, Norman Fry.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tipton, with full military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Nature Conservancy.
