Kent Tietjen

January 4, 1959 — November 26, 2020

It was the 4th day of January 1959 at Bothwell Regional Hospital in Sedalia when Norman and Irene Blanks Tietjen welcomed their youngest child, a son to the family and named him after his father, but called him Kent.  His parents had him baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Stover, where he remained a lifelong member.

Kent was the younger brother to Joyce and even though they were several years apart in age, they were very close as siblings.

He grew up in Stover, graduating from Stover High School in 1977.  Following high school Kent went to work alongside his Dad for the Golden Age Nursing Home, now the Golden Age Living Center, and for the next 43 years he worked tirelessly keeping the facility in top notch condition.  He greeted everyone with a smile and while he wasn’t much on small talk, he always took time to inquire about your day.

Kent married Glenda Montgomery on September 17, 2003, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and they spent the next 17 years traveling and exploring new places together.  He was always asking Glenda if she had ever gone here or done that, if her answer was no, the next thing she knew Kent had their next adventure planned.

When he wasn’t working you could find him in his woodshop making something or tending to his flowers after taking a floriculture class so he could take better care of his plants.  He was an avid golfer and was often found on his home course at Rolling Hills Country Club in Versailles.  He also looked forward to target shooting at the Sedalia Rod and Gun Club.  However, he never missed the chance to head to Columbia to see his sister, Joyce or a weekend trip to the city and a visit with his son John.

For the past few years Kent bravely fought cancer, working and staying active until recently.  Early Thursday morning, November 26, 2020, with his wife and sister-in-law by his side. Kent’s battle ended and went to be with his Lord.

His survivors include, his wife Glenda Tietjen of the home; children, John Tietjen and companion Marquita of Kansas City; Ray Whittle and wife Christy of Versailles; his sister, Joyce Walters of Columbia; six grandchildren, Cody, Dustin, Christian, Cale, Elizabeth and Colton, a great granddaughter, Addison, along with other relatives and many friends.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Cynthia and a brother-in-law, Jay Walters.

In keeping with his wishes he was cremated.

A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the Stover Cemetery with Pastor Tom Turra officiating.  Masks and Social Distancing are requested at the grave site.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Goldschmidt Cancer Center in Jefferson City.
