Joseph McCoin

November 14, 1959 — November 6, 2020

Joe McCoin came into this world on the 14th day of November 1959 in Kankakee, Illinois one of ten children born to Gerald and Jackie Suprenant McCoin.

He grew up in rural Kankakee, developing a love for the outdoors, which he never outgrew and remained an avid outdoorsman who looked forward to camping trips, fishing and hunting.

As a young man Joe joined the St. Anne Fire Department where his devotion to helping others was evident in everything he did.  It was while in the fire department he met and married Phyllis Edwards, who was a paramedic on the local ambulance.  Joe, who was the father of a daughter and son and Phyllis, who was the mother of four boys, combined families and Joe embraced the role of being a dad to his new family.

In 1999, Joe and Phyllis sold their farm in the St. Anne community and moved their family to rural Barnett, Missouri.  For the next several years Joe and his boys cleared the land and built a home where he could farm the land and raise cattle and horses.  His farm was located in the heart of the Mennonite community in Morgan County so when he wasn’t farming you would often find Joe transporting his Mennonite friends and neighbors to the central Missouri area.

Early mornings would find Joe at the local coffee shop and for the past several years he was a regular at the Love Light Coffee Shop in Versailles. On Saturday mornings he could be found at the local sale barn, not really buying anything but enjoying the chance to visit. If you knew Joe, you had a friend for life, if you didn’t know Joe; well it wouldn’t be long before he struck up a conversation with you, because Joe never met a stranger.

Joe’s stature may have been intimidating but it didn’t take long before you realized his love and devotion for his family.  He loved spending time with Phyllis and being with his grandkids and great grandkids was the highlight of his day.

Shortly after midnight on Friday, November 6, 2020, at the Boone Hospital in Columbia, Joe passed away from heart complications.

His legacy will continue with his wife, Phyllis McCoin of the home; his children, Jennifer Gray and fiancé Jon Meents of Ashkun, Illinois; Randy McCoin and wife Morgan of Stover; Jeremy Douglas and wife Tina of Watseka, Illinois; Michael Douglas and wife Brit of Salem, Illinois; Tim Douglas and wife Amy of St. Anne, Illinois and Matt Edwards and wife Courtney of Bourbonnais, Illinois; his grandchildren, Haley, Austin, Addison, Rowen, Reagan, Josh, Drew, Nate, Ella, Adeline, Martin, Julia, Carter and Jarrod and his great grandchildren, Sylus, Sawyer and Addison, along with his brothers, Todd McCoin and wife Lynn of Barnett; Jerry McCoin of St. Anne, Illinois and David McCoin and wife Melanie of Bourbonnais, Illinois; four sisters, Cindy Campbell of Dry Ridge, Kentucky; Linda Allison of Bradley, Illinois; Barb Spaulding of Kankakee, Illinois and Debbie Cote and husband Earl of Barnett; his aunt and uncle, Sandy and Joe Reeves of Barnett, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Ron and Mike McCoin.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, November 9 at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles with John Jr. Sensenig officiating.

In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated.
