John Allen Downs, 83, of Fortuna, passed away early Saturday, May 23, 2026, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City.
He was born June 8, 1942, in Marshall, one of ten children born to Charles and Adelle (Dehn) Downs. On September 2, 1961, in Kansas City, he was united in marriage to Barbara Mayhugh.
John spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver before later hauling corn, soybeans, and sod locally. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting competitions, and beekeeping, and he had an article published in Sioux Bee Honey. He also loved singing and playing guitar, listening to classic country music, and spending time playing Spades and Pitch. A skilled craftsman and builder, John made bows and arrows and was well known for his homemade bread.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Barbara Downs; one daughter, Wanda Downs; five grandchildren, Brandy Barton, Jimmy Cole, Becky Stevenson, Jesse Cole, and Melissa Lattin; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and six siblings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tim Downs; and three siblings.
A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced by Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Tipton.
