James "Jim" Black

August 14, 1940 — November 19, 2018

James Robert Black, age 78, of Stover, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018, at University Hospital in Columbia, with his family by his side.

He was born August 14, 1940, in Avondale, Missouri a son of Stanton and Josie Anderson Black.  On March 17, 1973, in Birmingham, Missouri, Jim was united in marriage to Ann Ryun Kirkman, who survives at their home.

He attended North Kansas City High School before serving his country in the US Army; receiving his honorable discharge in 1961.

When Jim was younger he worked as a construction worker and as a repairman for an apartment complex. He loved working with his hands and was proud of the many projects he worked on and improved.

Jim’s greatest priority was his family and he rarely missed an opportunity to be at one of their events, especially when it came to sports.  He could count on hand the number of ballgames he was unable to attend either to do his declining health or a family emergency.  Not only did he watch his grandkids play, but also his nephews and boys who became like grandchildren to him.

He was a member of the Stover First Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Mike Knight of Stover; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Pam Black of St. Joseph; three grandchildren and their spouses, J.D. and Amanda Knight of Stover; Brandi and Ryant Brown of Grain Valley and Ashley Knight and Kyle Hendricks of Stover; seven great grandchildren, Wyatt and Weston Knight, Raymi and Rynleigh Brown and Kash, Vincent and Zander Hendricks; adopted grandsons, Travis Burke and Joey Heman, along with his nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Larry Sinclair, two brothers, Charles and Howard Black and two sisters, Ruby Jones and Lois Moore.

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, November 24, at the Stover First Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Barker officiating.  Interment, with military honors, will be in the Stover Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.  until 12:00 noon at the church on Saturday.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Stover First Baptist Church building fund.
