William Henry Cable was born the 13th of April in 1926 in the community of Mora in Morgan County, Missouri. He was one of John Mason and Francis Elizabeth “Bessie” Tombs Cable’s five children.
Henry, as he was called, spent his childhood in rural Morgan County where he learned to love the outdoors. He grew up on the family farm in the hills of the Ozarks before the lake was created.
As so many young men his age, he served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines, receiving his honorable discharge on August 15, 1945.
Henry returned to his hometown, where he met and later married Mary Lee Simmons on May 6, 1949 in Versailles.
Henry and Mary moved to Kansas City, where he went to work at the railroad at the Kansas City Terminal. For the next 25 years he was employed with the railroad; providing for his growing family of one son and three daughters. He retired as superintendent of Public Works from the city of Buckner after several years of employment.
Henry and Mary never lost the love of the small community they grew up in. Following Henry’s retirement, they returned to Morgan County and built a home in Stover. It was here that you could find Henry working in his garden or mowing his yard; often accompanied by one of his canine companions.
His retirement years were filled with days fishing, tinkering in his shop and adding to his collection of pencils and other unusual items. He loved spending time at the local coffee shop, swapping stories and keeping up with the local news. If you happened to stop by the house, you were welcomed with a hug, offered a cup of fresh brewed coffee and invited to sit and visit for a while in the backyard.
However, his greatest enjoyment came from being with his family; especially his grandkids, who he loved to tease.
Henry passed away on Sunday morning, December 13, 2020, at his home with his family by his side.
Those who remain to carry on his legacy include his beloved wife of 71 years, Mary Cable of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Victoria and Wayne Dowell of Greenwood; Patricia and Gary Smith of Warrensburg and Jacquline and Donald Cochran of Chandler, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Cassy, Tracey, Chris, Kimmy, Sarah, Jamie and Michelle, twenty-two great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Everett Henry Cable, three brothers, Ernest, Fred and Woodrow and one sister, Mary Bates.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, in the Stover Cemetery with Pastor Diane Cutler officiating. Social distancing will be observed at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Stover Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
