Grover Gene Marriott

October 29, 1920 — May 3, 2017

Grover Gene Marriott, age 96, of Stover, passed away May 3, 2017, at his home. He was born October 29, 1920, in Stover, a son of Young and Lulu Ziegel Marriott.  On May 31, 1941, in Stover, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Kinder, who preceded him in death May 17, 2015.   Grover, or Gene as he was also known, grew up in Stover.  As a young man he moved to Kansas City where he was a driver with Yellow Freight, retiring after 40 years of employment.  He was a faithful member of the Stover First Baptist church, where he had been a member of the choir.    As a young man he served in the Conservation Corps and never lost his love for being outdoors.  He and Geraldine enjoyed spending time at their home in Mimosa Beach at the Lake of the Ozarks, where they could be found running a trot line to catch fish.  Following his retirement they moved to the lake, before returning to Stover and making it their permanent home.  In addition to being an avid fisherman, Gene was known throughout Stover as an excellent gardener.  His large garden supplied many neighbors, as well as the neighboring nursing home employees, with its bounty throughout the growing season.  When he wasn’t in the garden he could be found on his lawn mower, which he just upgraded last year so he could mow his large yard even faster than before.  Gene was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He enjoyed his visits at the local restaurant and being a good neighbor to everyone he met.  He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patty and John Stephens of Georgetown, Texas; two grandchildren, Angela Stephens and John and Tami Stephens, six great grandchildren, Sam, Matthew and Kylie Fanning and Creighton, Griffin and Aiden Stephens, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.  In addition to his beloved wife Geraldine, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Milford, Byrl and Marshall Marriott and two sisters, Woodie Critton and Alma Marie Bumpas.       Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Stover First Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Satterwhite officiating.  Interment will be in the Stover Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Stover First Baptist Church.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Stover First Baptist Church.
