Dorothy A. Poe

Dorothy Ann Poe, 91, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born January 4, 1935, in Tipton, one of seven children of William and Veronica (Remlinger) Schmidt.

On May 6, 1978, in Jefferson City, Dorothy was united in marriage to Robert E. “Bobby” Poe, who preceded her in death on October 29, 2003.

Family was at the center of Dorothy’s life. She looked forward to family get-togethers and cherished the time she spent with those she loved. She enjoyed dancing and found enjoyment in caring for her flowers. She also enjoyed traveling, taking trips to Europe and Hawaii, and residing in England and Bermuda for a time. Dorothy was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Jefferson City, an accomplishment she was proud of, and she also helped at the Marine Lodge in Jefferson City.

Dorothy worked for more than 30 years as a corrections officer at the Tipton Correctional Center, retiring at age 62. She was a member of St. Martin’s Parish in St. Martin.

She is survived by two children, Richard DeCosta (Cyndi) and their son, Steven, of Latham, and Deborah Spencer (Steven), of Warsaw; two stepchildren, Jimmy Poe and Vicki Poe; grandchildren, Robbie DeCosta (Amber), Stevie Salmon (Ben), Pierce Spencer (Cassie), , Bobby Poe (Shelly), Jessica Dade (Dwayne), Ashley Schults, Kelsey McClure, Casey Poe, Hannah Poe, Rebecca Poe, Clarissa Claoggero, Rachel Wade, and Ryan Emmerich; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Schmidt (Esther); her companion of 18 years, Jerry Sanning; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by two stepchildren, Kelly Poe and Brenda Hawkins; siblings, Louis Schmidt, Alma Mischak, Betty Lamm, Freda Toellner, and Teresa Brown; and a grandson, Daniel Hawkins.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Tipton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2026, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tipton. Burial will follow in Tipton Masonic Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Andrew Catholic Church.
