Cyrus Delmar Ferguson III

July 31, 1925 — March 20, 2019

Cyrus Delmar “Pete” Ferguson Jr., 93, formerly of Tipton, died Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.
He was born July 31, 1925, at Fortuna, a son of Cyrus Delmar and Alpha Ann Turpin Ferguson. On April 22, 1946, in Tipton, he married Lucile Marie Hall. She died in 2009.
Mr. Ferguson was a 1943 graduate of Tipton High School. While in high school he worked for Dave Hardy Lumberyard. When he turned 18 he enlisted in the United States Army, completing basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas. He served in Europe with the 310th Ordinance Battalion Headquarters, furnishing front line troops with military weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other equipment. He first debarked at Liverpool, England, in March 1944, Omaha Beach, France, on July 3, 1944, and was in Aywaille, Belgium, when the Battle of the Bulge began. He also served in Holland and Germany. He was awarded give Bronze Stars for campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. When the war ended he was in Kassel, Germany. In early December 1945, he embarked from France and landed at Norfolk, Va. He was discharged Dec. 30, 1945, at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.
He was manager of the American Sales Store and then worked at Stop and Shop Grocery Store for several years, both in Tipton. In the Spring of 1984, the family moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., where he worked full time for Scottsdale Health Care Hospital in the security department, and then worked part time after retirement. He returned to Missouri in August 2011, first living in Warsaw, and in 2013 moved to Tipton Senior Housing. In July 2018 he purchased a home in California.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Tipton. He enjoyed collecting model horses and building covered wagons and wagons. He enjoyed reading until his eyesight failed, watching old television shows, especially M*A*S*H and Mama’s Family, and family reunions and gatherings.
Surviving is his daughter-in-law, Belinda Ferguson, Mesa, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Marcia (Bill) Thornton, Glendale, Ariz.; one grandson, Scott (Danika) Solida, Great Bend, Kan.; four great-grandchildren, Sarah and Tyler Thornton, Kenny Perry and Nigel Solida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by a son, John Cyrus Ferguson on April 11, 2006; and his eight siblings, Beulah Hickman, Asahel Ferguson, William Ferguson, Dora Fassler, Marie Wehmeir, Louise Gilbert, Violet Pearl McNulty and Bobby Ferguson.
Graveside services and inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery, with the Rev. David Stephenson officiating.
