Carl Lindsay

First Sergeant Carl Lindsay (US Army ret.) Age 76, of Stover, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at St. Marys Health Center in Jefferson City.
He was born February 4, 1933, in the Gasconade Township in Laclede County, Missouri a son of William and Virgie Gravens Lindsay. On October 8, 1960, in Kansas City, Missouri, Carl married Geneva Cornett and she preceded him in death January 7, 2008.
Sgt. Lindsay served 25 years in the U.S. Army, beginning in April of 1952. In October of 1952 he was assigned to the 439th Combat Engineer Battalion in Korea. From 1956 to 1959, he served with the 77th Engineer Battalion in Germany and in 1961, he was assigned to the 538th Engineer Company as squad leader and section chief, returning to Korea for a second tour of duty. In 1964, Sgt. Lindsay returned to Germany as a platoon sergeant with the 724th Maintenance, 24th Infantry Division. In 1967, he was deployed to Vietnam after completing the 7th Army Non-Commissioned Officer Course and was assigned to the 552 Light Maintenance Company attached to the 76th Artillery Group as logistics NCO. Sgt. Lindsay returned for a second tour of duty in Vietnam in 1970, and later served as NCO in charge of the post transportation motor pool in Korea. His final assignment, prior to retirement, was a company First Sergeant in the 701st Maintenance Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas. Following his retirement, he served as Assistant Commandant and Commandant of Kemper Military School in Boonville from 1979-1993.
Sgt. Lindsay was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Service Star, Korea Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Six Good Conduct Medals and the Meritorious Service Award.
He was an active member of the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343 in Stover, having served as Post Commander. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a faithful and active member of the Stover United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees. Carl was also a member of the Fox Hound Hunting Club in Warrensburg and Ava. He enjoyed his running dogs, fishing and in earlier years hunting. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include daughter, Deborah Bilinski and fiancé Michael Feeback of Kansas City; grandsons, Jan Carl "Jamie" Bilinski and wife Leah Atkinson Bilinski and Jeffery Stephen Bilinski and wife Melina Tobar, sisters, Billia Conyers and Margaret Petford of Kansas City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Carl was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Farris, Bud and Dean Lindsay and sisters, Lois Gardner and Ruth Cox.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 17, at the Stover United Methodist Church with Pastor Diane Cutler officiating. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in the Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday, August 16, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343 in Stover.
