Alfred Lee Hicken, age 95, of Stover, passed away Saturday morning, October 28, 2017, at his son’s home in Smithton, where he had resided for the past few years. He was born January 26, 1922, in Prairie Hill, the son of Carl F. and Sarah K Lee Hicken. Alfred was united in marriage to Vivian Tagtmeyer on May 22, 1949, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover. Vivian preceded him in death June 6, 2012. Alfred grew up in Prairie Hill and moved to Stover in 1939. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Force from October of 1942 until October of 1945. As a young man he was employed with the MFA in Stover. He retired from the US Postal Service, where he worked as a postal clerk and later a rural carrier in the Stover community. Alfred was baptized and confirmed as an adult on April 5, 1949, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover; where he remained a faithful member until his death. He was a 72 year member of the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343 in Stover. Alfred and Vivian enjoyed traveling, seeing 48 states and parts of Canada. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting quail and geese; along with spending time on his farm. He was an accomplished craftsman who enjoyed woodworking. He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and grandpa great. His greatest enjoyment in life came from spending time with his family. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Belinda Hicken of Smithton; two granddaughters and their husbands, Andria and Jesse Gibb and Jessica and Chad Mooneyham; four great grandchildren, Ashton and Paisley Mooneyham and Zadie and Zane Gibb, along with other relatives and many friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carline Quigley. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 30, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover with Pastor Gerald Kurka officiating. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 30, at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund or the St. Paul’s Lutheran School.
